FORMER Kinross quick Sandy Rogers, along with all-rounder Daniel Magin, inspired Eastern Suburbs to an easy 155-run victory in last Saturday’s pre-season match against Western Zone at Cowra’s Twigg Oval.
Rogers blasted a quick-fire 22 not out in his side’s innings of 8-265, which Magin top scored in with 69 not out and was the pick of Easts’ bowlers in snaring 3-15 from his five overs as Western Zone slumped to just 110 in reply.
Rogers got rid of Young’s Nick Berry (12), Bathurst’s Josh Toole (1) and Dubbo’s Stu Naden (0) as his side routed Western – Mudgee’s Will Lindsay (28 not out) was the only one who provided any real resistance.
“It was great that [Easts] even came out, we’re very lucky and very appreciative that they made the trip,” Berry, Western’s skipper, said.
“I think our bowling was good, and Will Lindsay was about it with the bat.
“It’s just about batting time, seeing it through and getting on top.”
“At times we had to work really hard, it just goes to show if it wasn’t for Daniel Magin at the end we could have been really struggling,” said Easts coach Michael Bevan, a former Australian Test and One-Day International star.
“Three or four batters looked comfortable and in control and those three or four did the job today.”
Bowling first, Western was on top early, with Cowra’s Jacob McNaught (2-38) and Dubbo’s Tim Berry (2-19) bowling well to leave Easts struggling at 6-150.
The hard-hitting right-hander pummelled his 69 not out in a short space of time to inspire Easts to a respectable total, before he and new-ball partner Tas Yazdani dismissed Parkes’ Anthony Heraghty (10) and Dubbo’s Ryan Medley (2) respectively to start Western’s collapse.
Outside Lindsay, Mitch Bower’s 14 from first drop was the best performance from a Western batsman as the side was bundled out in just 33 overs.
